Visual Novel Lessons

Visual Novel Lessons

1. Introduction
Novelitas is a project aimed at addressing educational disparities and promoting the digital transformation of education by creating digital lessons in the form of visual novel-style classes.

2. Background / Problem Awareness
In the e-learning field, video lessons have played a central role, but several challenges remain:

(1) Lack of Interactivity
Video lessons generally lack interactivity, such as allowing learners to perform button operations or make choices.

(2) Accessibility Issues
Watching videos typically requires Wi-Fi, which may limit access in countries where infrastructure is not well developed.

(3) Challenges with Subtitles
It is difficult to provide perfect subtitles for video lessons, which means that learners with hearing impairments may not be able to fully benefit from them.

To address these challenges inherent in video lessons, we propose “visual novel-style classes” that utilize the visual novel system.

3. Visual Novel Lessons
A visual novel is a type of game where users read displayed text and advance the story by making choices or interacting with the game.

By applying this system to education, visual novel lessons can offer highly interactive and accessible lessons.

A key feature is the dialogue box, which in visual novels is primarily used to display narration and character conversations.

In visual novel lessons, the lesson script is displayed in the dialogue box using a typewriter effect. This allows essential information to be clearly shown to learners, including those with hearing impairments. Learners advance the script by pressing a “Next” button, which also fills a progress bar.

This button operation is a form of interactivity that video lessons lack. Additionally, at the end of the lesson, a few quiz questions are presented—another feature difficult to implement in video lessons.

Furthermore, the content is created using HTML and JavaScript, making it very lightweight and easy to access.

When opened in Google Chrome, Google Translate can automatically translate the lessons into various languages worldwide.

This is the concept behind our visual novel lessons, and we are committed to further developing it.
